I have compiz installed on CentOS 6.6, and I’ve been testing 7.1, but I can’t find any info on installing compiz on 7.1. Is there any info for this or is it not supported yet?

Thanks,

  • It seems to be a CentOS 7.1 “no support” thing. I installed 6.3 (did updates and it took me to 6.6) and did yum install compiz after installing epel repo support and it found it within CentOS 6.6.

  • The compiz project is run by Canonical now, and is not seen very much outside of Ubuntu. Whether that is for technical or licensing or political reasons I do not know.

    For KDE 4 users, the native window manager has many features found in compiz. GNOME 3 has a compositing window manager built into the shell(!), so compiz wouldn’t work with it anyway,

    I installed the kde option for CentOS 7.1 and it has desktop effects built in….

  • On my CentOS 7.x box:

    $ yum list available | grep -y compiz compiz.x86_64 1:0.8.8-27.el7.nux nux-dextop compiz-debuginfo.x86_64 1:0.8.8-27.el7.nux nux-dextop compiz-devel.x86_64 1:0.8.8-27.el7.nux nux-dextop compiz-lxde.x86_64 1:0.8.8-27.el7.nux nux-dextop compiz-mate.x86_64 1:0.8.8-27.el7.nux nux-dextop compiz-xfce.x86_64 1:0.8.8-27.el7.nux nux-dextop

    looks as if it’s not available for Gnome.

    I also vaguely recall recently seeing a posting that the reason for it not being available for Gnome is that Gnome already has compositing stuff built in. But I could be wrong about thatl.

    I noticed that too.  When I installed CentOS 7 the second time, I noticed a kde desktop and a gnome desktop in the offering.  If you don’t select either (my first try before selecting kde), what desktop is installed?

  • my guess is that it depends on which ISO image you used.

    I iinstalled a non-productized version from a DVD that installed Gnome, then I added the epel repo and installed Mate which then was made the default desktop.

    As an aside, I’m wondering if you removed all the “quote” marks in my first reply (the “> ” starting each line). Replies without such quote marks are awfully hard for others to read…

    Sorry if the email is message up.  I just put a dashed line above this line to see what happens this time.  icloud mail isn’t that great….  The message looks ok with indenting as I write this reply, but it seems to be messed up after being sent??

  • Looks like the online iCloud email is a bit borked….. sorry for the wasted bits :(

  • well, I think “messed up” is too strong. when viewing it in muytt, it’s all indented the same, and the “> ” markers mutt put in the previous mails are all gone.

    I hate stupid email tools that don’t follow net conventions. No offense to you, you can’t help it, it’s the ignorant program’s fault.
