Hey All,

Has anyone had trouble with Firefox/Thunderbird?

When I log on if I start Thunderbird first then I can’t start Firefox. Clicking on a link in an email fails to start Firefox.

If I start Firefox before Thunderbird then hyperlinks in emails open a page in the existing Firefox instance.

Other users on this same machine are having the same problems.

This has been happening for that last several days.

CentOS release 6.6 (Final)

Linux mushroom.patch 2.6.32-504.1.3.el6.i686 #1 SMP Tue Nov 11 16:30:09
UTC 2014 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Thunderbird 31.2.0
Firefox 31.2.0

  • No issues noted, however I’m running:
    Linux timsws 2.6.32-504.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP Wed Oct 15 04:27:16 UTC 2014
x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux and same versions of TB and FF as you.

  • Try running TB and FF from the command line in separate terminal windows and see if anything interesting shows up there.

  • Well, it has this to say:

  • We were seeing these messages for a user. It was related to his history file in his profile. So I imagine it could be a corrupted db file under the users profile.

    Phi.

  • In the past I’ve used this technique, however on this occasion the user just blew away his history files

Use the following process to unlock a sqlite db, ensure firefox is stopped first:-

    DBNAME=”db.sqlite” # substiture db for name of file echo ‘.dump’ | sqlite3 $DBNAME > $DBNAME.dump cat $DBNAME.dump | sqlite3 DBNAME.2
    mv $DBNAME $DBNAME.orig mv $DBNAME.2 $DBNAME

  • in addition, if above works, close firefox and thunderbird.

open file browser in ‘details’ and ‘show hidden’ mode.

in your home directory, open ~/.cache/mozilla/firefox/. delete the
    *.default directories.

next, open ~/.cache/thunderbird/. delete the *.default directories.

    mv ~/.mozilla ~/.mozilla-new
    mv ~/.mozilla-old ~/.mozilla

both firefox and thunderbird will recreate their ~/.cache paths.

open thunderbird and w/out firefox as you usually do. locate email with hot link, click to see what happens.

    post back results.

after, i will post an easy way to archive firefox and thunderbird for easy recovery.

  • after giving a lot of thought to problem, there are ?easy? ways of locating problem. maybe.

i am using firefox and thunderbird 24.8.0 [waiting for mozilla to clean up all the bugs with ‘latest and greatest’], so i am not aware of what all files are in profile directory, other than as mentioned below.

i would think that if there are problems with any type of history file, as suggested, it would be easier just to rename ‘history file’ to
‘history file’.old, then reopen firefox and let it rebuild history file. _except_ for bookmarks file “places.sqlite”.

“places.sqlite” when backed up as a bookmarks-*.json file, i do not believe, backup “history folders”. imbw.

if correct, backing up bookmarks, then restoring from *.json would restore bookmarks without history folders.

tho it would be easier/quicker to just delete folders under “History”
    in “Library” window.

problems with firefox may be easy to locate by using logging of
“Browser Console”, which is opened with . after opening, click on [Clear], then close “Browser Console”, then firefox.

next, try opening a hot link, after firefox crashes, open firefox manually, open “Browser Console”, read what is shown to see what may be causing problem. also see hot link #5 bellow.

following are a few of bookmarks that i have related to your problem,
_if_ problem is related to “places.sqlite”, as suggested.

    1a- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Category:History
    1b- http://kb.mozillazine.org/History.dat
    2- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Places.sqlite

    https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Tech/Places/Database
    4- kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_crashes

again, after you get this problem solved, i will post easy way of archiving mozilla progs.

    hth.

  • Apparently you are affected by this bug:

    https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id66921

(Thanks to a post by Phil Wyett on the Scientific Linux mailing list regarding the bug report.)

Try downgrading nss-softokn to 3.14.3-17.el6 to ‘fix’ the issue. Hopefully a patched version is released upstream soon.
