Good evening from Singapore,

Anybody downloaded, installed, and tried CentOS 8.0 1905 yet?

Download link from CentOS download mirror near to Singapore:

The DVD ISO filesize is 6.6 GB.

I am downloading it right now…Approx. 20 mins more to download completion using 1 Gbps home fiber internet connection.

  • I feel your pain re Gnome.

    Installing CentOS 8 on a VMware VM which uses BIOS boot mode using the graphical installer results in an installer gui which is chopped off at the right.

    Workaround is to select the install option, hit the tab key, and append vga

  • Host: CentOS 7.7, virtualisation through KVM and qemu. Pretty standard, straight out of the box. I just used VMM to run up another VM and installed into it.

  • Sorry to ask this dumb question, but what’s the disadvantage of using such a kernel?

    I assume, some of the newer kernel-features would need special utilities or upgraded versions of the utilities included?

  • It’s not a RHEL (or CentOS) kernel so you lose the stability (kABI), robustness, testing etc that comes with an Enterprise Linux kernel. Additionally, as you correctly identify it may break things or not work
    / play well with current userland bits.

    It’s a use at your own risk offering to allow you to try out features /
    functionality that have yet to appear in the distro kernel :-)

  • I had fun with that – enter any number you like, if it’s not valid it will prompt you with suggestions.

    It seems to want decimal on the commandline, hex if responding to the prompt.

I will test upgrade from C7 to disable epel and webtatic. I’m waiting for blogs and “youtubs” to report on appstream and what I could install from Fedora maybe. I have more confidence in Fedora repos than epel, since the latter is usually rebuild Fedora packages anyway.

  • Did you try SCL instead of directly installing packages from another repo?
    It is similar to how the new Appstreams allow multiple concurrent versions.

    EPEL is a Fedora SIG project.

  • I didn’t know there are problems with installing CentOS 8.0 with GNOME. I am going to install CentOS 8.0 as a virtual machine/guest with Oracle VirtualBox.

  • I used 819 / 333 (hex) – 1024 x 768 x 16.

    Enough to see the full install screen.

    I’m doing it the easy way on our new production VMs – select EFI boot in the VM’s boot options and it all works.

  • RHEL/CentOS 8 is created from Fedora 28/29 packages and kernel, but Red Hat does backport important drivers to it’s kernel. RHEL/CentOS kernel is not directly comparable to vanila kernel due to many, many changes.

If you want to thank someone, you can sent them a private/direct message, not via the list. many will be thankful.

    If you do not know something, like “SCL”, “orphaned packages”, etc., please first search on the net (Google it) with for example “linux CentOS SCL” and then only ask for further clarifications. No one has time to explain everything in detail to you, you need to learn the basics, research enything that interests you and only then ask specific questions.

    That is a term for a package in the repo (and generally for any project), that is technically working, but no one is watching over it. Some maintainers speak openly about it, but some do not and a package is still in the repo, but do not receive updates, nor fixes.

  • Heads up, Hyper-V Gen 2, CentOS 8 Server with GUI install results in a black screen as updates are needed for X to properly detect and load the video. If you can SSH into the box, do a yum update and it should grab the needed updates, then reboot.
